This adventure novel by Jules Verne perfectly illustrates the famous proverb: "Money does not make happiness.". Indeed, the hero Kin-Fo, very rich but unable to know happiness or to feel emotions, confronts the idea of death, when he believes he is ruined. He then makes a pact with his philosopher friend Wang, who promises to kill him one day and disappears afterwards. As a result, the hero realizes that he is still wealthy, that he no longer wants to die, but rather to marry his beloved and enjoy life. Unfortunately, Wang is nowhere to be found to cancel his promise. It is therefore by trying to find him in the four corners of China, that the hero understands the true value of life.

Double volume edition followed by "Cing Cents Millions de la Begum" and "Les Révoltés de la Bounty".
